06-24-15 Stormy Evening

This evening a pretty impressive storm came through. The sky turned dark and green. The winds bent the trees and the rain blew sideways.

As a child I grew up in an old farmhouse with a traditional front porch. During summer thunderstorms, we would sit on the front porch and watch the storms roll in. We would linger outside as long as we could until a loud clap of thunder or a close up flash of lightning would send us piling inside. Then we would watch from the windows waiting to see which tree limbs would break off the nearby trees. If it was particularly bad, my mother would encourage us to stay near the basement door just in case. The basement was only ventured into when you were feeling particularly brave. It was dark, musty, with a concrete floor. It was lit by bare bulbs and filled with spider cricket jumpy things and cobwebs. An occasional snake would find its way in, evidenced by the snake skins we would find in the shadows. My mother kept her canned vegetables from the garden down there, and when we were sent to get a jar of beans or corn we ran as fast as we could, praying nothing would jump out from a corner. Really, that basement was the place of campfire stories!

But I digress. This evening, while the winds raged outside and the rain beat against the windows, searching for an entrance inside, we curled up in the living room to wait it out. And what better way than to color?

As the storm eased, the sky brightened. It's a strange phenomenon when the sky darkens for a storm and then brightens as it passes, only to darken once more with night.

Thankfully the storm brought cooler temperatures. Hopefully the reprieve from this heat will last for a few days!

06-23-15 Inspirational Moments vol. 1

I often run across inspirational quotes on the Internet. Usually they are set against a blurry background of something peaceful. Trees, water drops, and empty roadways are a pretty common visual theme.

So I have decided to start my own series of inspirational memes... as spoken by my children. Today we feature C.

06-21-15 Happy Fathers Day

I am extremely grateful to have married a man that isn't afraid to get in the trenches of fatherhood.

Tim is good at being a dad. Because all my births were c-sections, he was the first one to get to hold each of the kids...

And from those first moments he was hooked. He never complained about the inordinate number of diapers he's had to change, and he's even taken quite a few for the team when especially smelly ones pop up. He kills all the bugs, takes out the trash, and cleans up all the vomit. He gives the best piggy back rides and amuses the kids with a variety of silly voices and tickle monsters. He's a cowboy, he's a prince, he's a superhero, he's papa.

In so many ways, Tim is an awesome dad! So here is a shout out to him, my partner in crime and my best friend. Thanks for being such a wonderful daddy!! Love you!

I'd also like to thank my dad... The man I still call daddy and probably always will. He set a high standard of what a man should be. It is an honor to have him as my father and friend. Love you, daddy!

This evening was a wonderful evening just hanging with the family and enjoying each other's company. Nothing fancy, just peaceful!

06-20-15 Birthday Party Fun!

One of the great things about marrying into a big family, and then that big family growing with lots of babies, is we always have reasons to celebrate! What makes it even better is that we all live so close together. I love that my kids get to see their cousins so much!

Today we celebrated our little nephew Daniel's 4th birthday. He is a sweet kid with a ton of energy and a kind heart. He has an adorable laugh and a beautiful smile!

His mom did an awesome job on his Captain America birthday cake. So cool!

Baby E and Baby Bekah are three months apart. I have to watch Baby E when he is around her because he likes to go for her eyes! Baby E is doing really well with sitting and is starting to wiggle himself to places he wants to go.

Such cuties!

06-19-15 Flashback Friday

I was looking through some old photos and came across these ones from this week three years ago. Look how little (and stylish) my girl was!

And wow, does Big E look like Baby E in this pic! Big E was only ten weeks old!

Here we were, our little family of four!

In present day news, Baby E has gotten three more teeth! (Two on the top and one more on the bottom.) that probably explains all his sleepless nights!

06-18-15 Piano with Daddy

I had the good fortune to marry into a very musical family. My husband loves to sing and I love to hear his voice. It's one of the many things that attracted me to him! He has an incredible voice. He is also great at being different characters- he is the go-to book reader in our family because he does all the voices. He is also our resident monster, super hero, bug killer, and all around great guy! But seriously, he has a way with kids and I love watching the kids play with him. :)

06-17-15 Selfies with Goobs

Goobs is having a rough evening... It's one of those evenings where there is more screaming than sleeping. This is rough because without the central ac working, we can't leave him in his room and let him fuss it out. So, we are taking turns walking, rocking, reading to him, and cuddling.

Baby E has an irritating habit of taking a 45 minute nap around 8 pm. There really isn't any way around it because he will just scream until he falls asleep. Nothing will calm him or cheer him up. It also coincides with the big kids' bedtime, so letting him sleep helps facilitate getting the older kids to bed. But then, like clockwork, he wakes up and wants to play or eat or just see you. Then it takes awhile to get him back down. Hopefully the ac will get fixed soon so he can go back in his room!

It is fun to see how each kid is different. Singing and rocking usually helped C get to sleep. Big E never wanted rocked and just wanted to be put straight in his crib (he meant business when it came to sleeping.) Baby E likes to have his big head rubbed.

Last night I slept on the couch with Baby E in his rock n play right next to me. When he would wake up I would roll over and give him his paci and rest my hand on his chest. He would hug my arm and fall back asleep. It was wonderful!

06-16-15 Enough said...

Ugh! Enough said, right?

It is currently a toasty 86 degrees in our house right now thanks to our non working ac. Thankfully we are borrowing two window units from a friend, so the kids have a cool room. Tim, Baby E and I are sleeping downstairs with the other air conditioner. (And we thought our toddler mattress days were over!) (at least my hubby is being chivalrous and giving me the couch!)

Speaking of my sweet hubby, it has been exactly eight years since that wonderful man got down on one knee and asked me to be his bride. Seven years of marriage and three kids later and I still choose him!

Wow, we looked so young!

06-15-15 An unexpected day off

Our AC unit started leaking and the only time they could come to look at it was between 10:30-12:30 today, so I ended up staying home. During the course of the morning the infection in my toes started to spread, however the pain was going down and the color seemed a little better. I decided I would go ahead and see my doctor just to check up on it. It still hurt to walk and the toes were still pretty swollen. After 8 doses of antibiotic I thought there would be more progress.

I was able to get in to see her and she confirmed that it looked better and worse at the same time. She  pressed around on the area and said that the blood flow looked good. I showed her the pictures I had been documenting of my toes and it helped to see the progression. In the end she decided to prescribe me another cream, this one much stronger, in hopes it will knock it out. If not, she will likely send me to a specialist.

Meanwhile my mom sent me a medical boot. I am very excited about this because my children actually notice it when I am wearing it and they steer clear of my feet. Finally!

It was nice getting to spend a little extra time with my babies today! :) they were a lot of fun!

06-14-15 Thank You, Pastor and Diana

This evening was the retirement celebration for Pastor Wagner and Diana. It has been a privilege to be a part of this church community and be under his leadership for a good portion of my life.

So to Pastor and Diana, thank you so much for the time, energy, and prayers that you invested into us. We are grateful for the way you pointed us towards Christ by your words and deeds! We love you!

Tim and I put together three few videos for the service. One of them didn't play because we ran out of time, but I thought I'd post the links to all three if anyone wants to watch them.

06-13-15 I'm officially obsessed with my toes...

So I'm obsessed with my toes! I know, you are probably thinking "enough with the toes already!" But really, they look freakish. Just stick me between the bearded lady and the monkeys riding unicycles.

Actually today was the first day that I thought they started to look a little better. The purple was turning back to red and the swelling wasn't as bad.

That was until the incident.

Dun. Dun. Dunnnn...

I went grocery shopping this evening with my sister, C and baby E. While we were walking down the frozen food aisle I was looking at packages of sweet and sour chicken when apparently C started twirling. She was twirling so much that she lost her balance and her shoe landed full weight, in motion on my swollen toes. That's right, 37 pounds (plus momentum) smashed/scraped across my toes.

If you were in Safeway tonight and heard a scream and then pathetic whimpering coming from the frozen pizza aisle, that was me. So much pain. I had to sit on the floor in the middle of the grocery store, waiting for the pain to ease up enough to stand. Almost instantly my toes swelled back up and turned dark purple. *sigh*

Poor C felt horrible about what happened and by the time we got home, she said the most heartfelt apology I have ever heard from her. I hugged her and told her I forgave her and then reminded her for the 100th time in four days to be very careful around mommy's feet!

Right about now I am ready to invest in some steel toed boots! I can only get my feet into flip flops at the moment, and they don't provide any protection.

So tonight you get to see a picture of my toes. But first a picture of Baby E. (The blogger app automatically chooses the first picture to display with the link, and I want to spare you having my puffy toes on your news feed!)

Have I ever mentioned that I hate feet? I think they are absolutely gross. In fact, I only like six feet in the whole world and they all belong to my children!

Remember my purple pedicure on girls day? It's gonna have to last awhile cause no one is getting near these feet!

Please pray that my foot heals quickly and that there are no more mishaps! Thank you!

06-12-15 At least it is Friday

Here is another picture of my baby... Instead of my toes... Cause seriously they look like they are gonna explode! The purple turned to dark purple today and naturally I freaked out. I called my doctor and she told me that 'dark purple' is ok but 'black' is very bad. If my toes turn black I need to go to the ER immediately. So tonight I am sitting on my couch with my foot propped up feeling very grateful for "dark purple!"

Fortunately the infection hasn't spread. It's still very hard to walk. Tonight it has started to itch. I'm hoping that's a sign of healing.

Thanks for the prayers,

06-11-15 A bad week for toes...

So the night that Charlotte scraped up her toe, my foot started itching. It wasn't bad and I figured that I must have gotten a mosquito bite. When I woke up yesterday it started itching more and throughout the day it increased. By nighttime, it was beginning to hurt and get swollen. When I woke up this morning it was even worse. During the day the swelling continued. My toes were hot to the touch and it got to the point that I could not bend them. They were starting to go numb! I took some ibuprofen and after a couple of hours the swelling started to subside, and the red started morphing into purple. When I got to the doctors office at 4 pm I could move my toes again and the pain was going away. (And in my true graceful fashion, I proceeded to accidently ram my toes into the leg of a chair) So much pain!!! By the time the doctor saw me, I had fought back the tears and explained everything that had happened. She asked me a bunch of questions and seemed surprised that my toes had gotten that bad in less than two days. She said it is definitely an infection and my body is trying to fight it off, hence the purple hue. She prescribed a strong oral antibiotic and a steroid cream for the area. She said it was good I came in because it likely would have spread. She couldn't determine the source, but said it could have been reaction to a bug bite or any number of other infections.

So now I am home. My toes are swollen again, but I've taken ibuprofen and my first dose of medicine. She said within 24 hours the swelling should be down. I sure hope so as this is pretty painful! Pray that this heals quickly and doesn't get worse.

Instead of showing you pictures of my swollen toes, I will end this post in a cheery note! Baby E is working on his sitting skills!

I did say "working on" not "mastering!"

06-10-15 Want to see a gross toe?

C and E were running around outside last night when C tripped and fell. She got a pretty bad scrape on her knee and hurt her toe. I cleaned and bandaged them and she went to bed. When she got up this morning it wasn't looking too good. The toe had been oozing and the skin looked pretty damaged. I cleaned it and rebandaged it and proceeded to obsess about it all day. I decided to take her to the doctor just to make sure it was ok.

After a short wait the doctor came in and took a look at it.

She said that "the skin was reattaching nicely." I'm pretty sure I felt a shiver down my spine with that phrase! (I don't do well with other people's blood or injuries!) she didn't want to risk introducing an infection by stitching it, so she prescribed an antibacterial cream that I need to apply three times a day. Yay...

So here's to praying that the wound heals clean and quick!

06-09-15 Lovely Surprise

I got home this evening to a lovely surprise... A landscaped front yard! My mother in law dropped by while I was at work and did the whole thing! I love it! Thanks, Mom!!
