And boy is he excited! This morning he kept asking me what his number was. It took me a moment to figure out he meant his age. This guy really is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I hope that as he grows older he is able to retain his good natured personality.

03-11-15 The Mom Stays in the Picture
I read an article once where a woman wrote about how she hated the way that she looked and she always avoided being photographed. She couldn't get past her insecurities about her appearance. One day her young son found a photo of her on her phone and said something along the lines of how happy and pretty she looked. When she looked at the photo, she didn't see a beautiful woman... She only saw her flaws. But she realized that her son saw her differently. To him, she was the world. He didn't care if she was overweight, or had frumpy hair. She was beautiful. From that day on, she decided to let go of that insecurity and allow herself to be photographed. She understood that when her children were grown they would want to see their mother in their photos and they wouldn't care what she looked like. She was their mom. The mom stays in the picture.
Three kids later, I have to say that it is hard for me to see myself in photos. Three pregnancies have taken their toll on my body. There are definitely days when I don't feel beautiful. My clothes don't fit the way they used to, my hair can be unmanageable, and my eyes can look so tired from a sleepless night. But when I decided to do this 365, I told myself that the mom stays in the picture! I have been very purposeful in including photos of myself (even ones that make me cringe!) Because when my kids grow up, I want them to see that nothing made me happier than being with them!

03-09-15 Four Month Appointment
Today Baby E had his four month well visit. While he has gained weight, he is still hanging out in the third percentile! Little fellow! However he seems to be an over achiever in the head size department because he's coming in at the 80th percentile. :)
The doctor prescribed a stronger medicine for his eczema. We also discussed the future with his calcium deposits. He gave us the number for ortho at Johns Hopkins and I will be making an appointment for sometime in the next few months. Since it is such a rare condition, he said that we could visit genetics as well if we wanted to. Still deciding on that.

03-08-15 Perspective Change
When C was born, I remember feeling so overwhelmed. As a first time mom, everything about parenthood made me nervous. I second guessed nearly every decision. I knew for sure that I was messing up.
Thankfully by the time Big E showed up, I started calming down. There was no longer time for mountains when molehills would suffice. My parenting style got a little more lax.
Now that Baby E is here I realize that the mom he is getting is so totally different than the one his big sister met and grew with.
This was made so evident to me today when I was sitting in a chair at church and I looked down at Baby E asleep in his car seat and I was perfectly content. It was so peaceful. (The older two are visiting my parents.) Four years ago, I would have felt just a little bit anxious that I was sitting there alone, with a sleeping baby and the full weight of the responsibility of parenthood would have pressed on me. But with only one out of three children to look after today, it seemed so serene. How my perspective has changed!

03-06-15 Happy Four Months
I can't believe that baby E is now four months old. It's so much fun to see his little personality forming. E is a smiley little fellow.
- He loves his bear suit and wears it to sleep at night and for naps.
- He thinks it is hilarious if you blow on his face.
- He wears size one diapers.
- His cradle cap is still going strong.
- He has to wear socks on his hands because he keeps scratching up his head.
- He is in 0-3 month clothing.
- His eyes are a beautiful blue color.

03-05-15 More Snow
I have to admit, I am loving all the snow days and delays this year. It has been nice to get some extra time with the kids, especially baby E! Today we had a lazy day. We visited the cousins, and then hung out at home. We took C out to play in the snow. (Big E didn't get to join in because he wouldn't eat his dinner.)

03-04-15 Sleep Charts
Last night the children woke us up six times. SIX TIMES!!! Twice for the baby to eat, twice for drinks of water, once for a lost stuffed giraffe and once for just because. Needless to say, functioning today was pretty difficult on such little sleep.
It has been an ongoing issue since the baby was born that the older kids have been waking up more often. It's starting to cause some real problems for mommy and daddy and things need to change. So today I decided to make charts. For C I made an Elsa themed chart. Each night that C doesn't wake us up, Elsa gets to move one more snowflake. Eventually she will travel from her ice castle to Arrandell.

03-02-15 X-Ray Results
This afternoon I heard from Baby E's doctor and he confirmed that the lump on his ribs is indeed a calcium deposit. We will likely have him seen by a specialist at Hopkins in the coming months so that they can get a baseline on him. Again, it is unusual for them to be developing so early, so the doctor wants to keep a strict eye on his bone development. It wasn't the news we were hoping to hear, but at least we have some idea of what we are dealing with.
I was pretty bummed about the news this afternoon, so it was extra special to me this evening that I got to see him roll over for the first time. (FYI... If you see baby E do any milestones, don't tell me... I like to think that Tim or I get to see them first, even if it isn't the case.)
In other news, Baby E has graduated from the swaddling blanket... This is huge because being swaddled was the only way he would sleep. However, in lieu of being swaddled, he now will only sleep in his bear suit.

02-28-15 Sleepy Boy
Today was a long day. There was ballet in the morning and a birthday party in the afternoon. The kids had a blast, but they were certainly ready for bedtime this evening. C practically fell asleep at the dinner table!
Looks like Baby E couldn't hold out much longer either!

02-26-15 Snow Days and X-Rays
It snowed this morning pretty heavily and work opened late. I decided to take the day off and got to spend some extra time with the kids. We made brownies and hummus. We played with cars. Aunt Julie visited and we played doctor. We walked over and visited cousins and played there too. So much playing to be had!
And when our road was finally plowed and the sun came up, I decided to take Baby E down for his x-Ray.
It was kinda sad pinning him down on the x-Ray table and holding his arms up so they could get a good shot. He screamed most of the time. We were both happier when it was over. After the x-Ray, the technician asked me some questions that got me a little concerned, but I've been trying not to worry about it until I hear from the doctor. She emailed him the x-rays so hopefully we will hear from him very soon.
We appreciate your all your prayers and well wishes. Thank you!

02-25-15 The Interview
I was thinking today that I know a lot about my children, but I don't know them in their own words. How do they see the world? So tonight I prepared a list of questions to ask them over dinner. I filled in the answers as they told me.

02-23-15 Multiple Hereditary Exostoses
After doing a little research into my family history (I.e.- texting various family members and waiting for the responses to pour in) I learned that our shared medical link is called Multiple Hereditary Exostoses... A rare genetic bone condition. It is a condition that was passed down from my father's side of the family- of the cousins in my generation, half of us have it, though it seems to be spotty within each family. (I have it, my sister does not.) I was told I had calcium deposits growing up, but was never given an exact diagnosis. These calcium deposits tend to form on the long bones as a child grows. They can vary in degrees of severity, sometimes stunting bone growth or mishaping skeletal structure. They very very rarely turn cancerous. They cause pain during bone growth and the only cure is surgical removal and/or pain management.
I would consider my case relatively mild. My mother noticed my first calcium deposit when I was around five. Over the years, more developed. As a child (and then a teenager) I was terribly self conscious about them. I had one develop above my knee and I hated wearing shorts or bathing suits. Middle school children are a cruel breed and more than one of my peers pointed them out. My most painful one was on the wrist of my right hand. It hurt to write. And it definitely hurt to play volleyball (which my gym teachers rarely let me off the hook for.) One below my knee made walking painful at times.
By the time I was twenty, I had three removed including the one on my wrist. (Some of my other relatives had many more surgeries than me.) But when I was in my mid twenties the pain stopped and they were all but forgotten, except one that developed in my ribcage, which causes some discomfort when I lay on my right side.
All that to say that this is what we are researching as the cause for the bump on Baby E's ribcage. However, two things are strange about his situation.
1- the location. Calcium deposits tend to form on the long bones, and rarely the flat bones (such as the ribs) however, I just confirmed I have one on my ribcage, so it isn't impossible.
2- his age. Calcium deposits don't typically show up in someone that young. Most start showing up between 5-12 years old.
With these things in mind, Baby E's doctor will be sending us to get an x-Ray. We had all hoped to avoid this because of his age, but it is important for us to pinpoint what is going on. If this is a calcium deposit, more will likely show up, so we need to be on the lookout as his bones grow. If it isn't, then hopefully the x-Ray will help the doctor determine exactly what is going on. Prayers are appreciated as we work all this out.
Thankfully the lump does not seem to cause him any discomfort. It doesn't bother him if you press on it. He just continues to be a happy, smiley little baby boy!
